Nutrition Unit Notes
Nutrition Terms
Calorie: A measurement for how much energy food provides and how much energy you burn off as the day goes on.
Protein: Large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body. They do most of the work in cells and are necessary for the structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs. It also helps build muscle.
Metabolism: The chemical reactions in the body’s cells convert food into energy.
Metabolic Rate:
Carbohydrate: These are sugar/glucose molecules that are bonded together.
Lipid: Fatty compounds that perform a variety of functions in our body.
Sodium: A silver-white soft waxy ductile element of the alkali metal group that occurs abundantly in nature in combined form and is very active chemically. It’s also known as salt, though salt isn’t pure sodium.
Fiber: Indigestible parts or compounds of plants, which pass relatively unchanged through our stomach and intestines. Fiber is mainly a carbohydrate. The main role of fiber is to keep the digestive system healthy.
How to Calculate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
Female BMR Equation
655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age in years)
Male BMR Equation
66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) – (6.8 x age in years)
