Henry VII’s foreign policy towards Spain and Burgundy

Henry wanted an alliance with them as they were rich and powerful and he could use them as protection against France.

Treaty of Medina del Campo:

Terms:

  • Marriage between Arthur and Catherine

    • Showed recognition from major European power and signified Ferdinand thought Henry’s position on the throne was secure

    • Took a long time, Ferdinand kept stalling - one of them could’ve died during that time

  • Dowry worth £40,000 paid in installments

    • Welcome cash boost

    • Henry never received full amount bc Arthur died 5 months into the relationship

  • Spain promise not to help any English rebels

    • Meant they recognized and respected the Tudor Dynasty

  • Possible trade deals

    • Would be hugely beneficial for England bc of the new world

    • Wouldn’t have to rely on cloth trade with Burgundy

  • If either country goes to war with France, other will immediately intervene

    • Both want lands in France and Spain had a huge army

Reduced threat of Auld alliance

Henry’s Marriage negotiations 1501-09:

  • fails to gain any marraige treaties for himself, his daughters or his son.
