Week 9

• Social network: webs of connections that link people either directly or indirectly to other people
• Nodes: individuals who share connections
• Tides: the relations between individuals
• Social context: the environment of people, cultures, and relationships that surround us
• Bridging: the development of ties with people that are dissimilar in important ways
• Bonding: the development of ties with people who are similar in some important ways (age, gender, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, etc.)
• Echo chamber: where like-minded individuals repeat your opinions back to you rather than exposing you to variations and differences

Week 10

• Teamwork: the coordinated effort by people working towards a common goal
• Synergy: the concept that members of a team working cooperatively will accomplish much more than individuals acting alone
• Trust: a set of expectations that the healthcare provider will do the best for the patient; the ability of the team and the single team members as well as the meaning of the task to solve
• Conflict: a struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands.
• Conflict management: the process by which conflict is dealt with in an effective and constructive manner
• Decenter: being willing to shift your perspective and look at multiple points of view
• Recenter: working with your team to identify a common plan or goal
• Groupthink: the tendency to go along with the group and discourage different options

Week 14

• Cohort effect: the unique historical experiences that shape and mold a generation’s thinking and behavior
• Period effect: major life-altering events, such as war, social change, and technological advances affect everyone, but some generations more than others
• Lifecycle effect: the change in a generation’s behaviors and attitudes over time due to changes in the roles people play and their biological maturation

Week 15

• Translator: provides written language services

• Interpreter: provides spoken language services

• Consecutive interpreting: occurs when one person takes the source language form speaker 1 and produces it in the target language for speaker 2…the exchange is reversed, and the source language comes from speaker 2 and is produced in the target language by speaker 1

• Simultaneous interpreting: occurs when the interpreter simultaneously relays the information to the audience or individual

• Whole Brain Definition: functioning of both cortex and the brainstem cease

• Cortical Brain Standard: function of the cortex ceases; the irreversible loss of capacity for consciousness

• Grief: the personal emotions that follow death

• Bereavement: the experiences that follow the death of a loved one

• Mourning: the process through which grief (emotions) are expressed
