1Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed,
Elders among you
Title of an office? Not in 21st century understanding of “office”
Leaders or just older members? Definitely those in leadership
The God called leadership of the church
Fellow elder
Peter is one of them (his “office” is Apostle)
Witness of the sufferings of Christ
Peter’s apostolic eye-witness probably not in mind, but faithful gospel proclamation ministry of church leaders
Partakers of glory to be revealed (4:13)
2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;
Shepherd the flock of God
The leadership task of elders
Peter’s own shepherding commissioning “
Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”…“Tend My lambs.” “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”…“Shepherd My sheep.” “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”…“Tend My sheep.” John 21:15-17
Voluntarily, not under compulsion
Not because we have to or someone pressures us, because we want to
Not for sordid gain, but eagerly
Anytime money motivates ministry its sordid gain
Would you do it for free?
Will you “make your living” from secular employment & still serve God’s people?
3 nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.
lording it over them
“You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:42-45
Examples to the flock
Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. 1 Timothy 4:12 Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1
4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
Chief Shepherd
I am the Good Shepherd (John 10)
I am the door of the sheepfold (John 10)
Unfading crown of glory
Our reward isn’t monetary or material
Not laurel wreath of athletic victor
Not golden wreath of civic benefactors
Imperishable, eternal, reflection of God’s glory
5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Younger men
Those called to follow those who are called to lead
Even leaders have leaders God has placed over them
Submit to the leadership of those God has placed in authority over you
Don’t have to agree to recognize their right to make decisions.
All of you
The leaders and the led
Be clothed in humility
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus. Philippians 2:3-5 Proverbs 3:34
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,
Mighty hand of God
Used only here in New Testament
Used throughout OT in connection with deliverance from Egypt
You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day. Deuteronomy 5:15
Humble yourself under God’s mighty hand (1st of 3 final imperatives)
Since suffering is not inconsistent with God’s will, purpose, and plan
Painful trials part of normative Christian living
These fiery ordeals are a part of God’s purifying refinement in our lives
Leave our exaltation also in His mighty hand
7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
Casting all your anxieties on Him
helps us obey exhortation to be humble
Trusting God always for everything
For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:25-34
8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.
Resist him
Don’t fear, cower, or flee
Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7
Firm in your faith
taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Ephesians 6:16
We don’t suffer alone
Every faithful believer everywhere is at odds with this fallen world '
Do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God. 2 Timothy 1:8
10After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.
After you have suffered for a little while
Only temporary
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Romans 8:18
