Regeneration Themes

War and Ethics
  • Setting: 1917, World War I. Germany is exhausted and seeks a "negotiated peace," but Britain and its allies are committed to fighting for a thorough victory.

  • Ethical Dilemma: Soldiers question sacrificing their lives for a questionable cause, as argued by Second Lieutenant Sassoon. This raises the question of whether duty should compel them to sacrifice for a cause that benefits certain aristocrats.

  • Condemnation of War: The novel condemns wars fought for ulterior motives or the interests of certain elites, which the narrative suggests is the case for many wars.

Male Relationships
  • Exploration of male relationships: The story explores various relationships and affections among men, including comradeship, friendship, and romantic love.

  • Rivers' observation: Points out that love between men was simultaneously encouraged and forbidden in the war-filled early 20th century, highlighting society’s hypocrisy in its dealings with male affection in all its forms, including homosexuality.

Trauma and Mental Illness
  • War Neurosis: The horrific conditions of World War I and the advent of trench warfare led to widespread trauma among soldiers, resulting in widespread mental breakdown, referred to as “war neurosis.”

Alienation vs. Belonging

  • Sassoon's perspective: Returning to the civilian world is a major struggle for soldiers experiencing the horrors of World War I, requiring each to find their own way to restore
