Conversion of the Other Kingdoms of the Heptarchy

Augustin, the apostle of the Anglo-Saxons, died 604 and is buried in Canterbury

  • Not a great man but laid the foudnating of English Christianity and civilization

  • Laurentius (604-619) and Mellitus (619-624) succeeded him in office 


Kingdoms often were on the road to becoming Christian, often by the marriage of kings to Christian princesses, but this process relapsed to heathenism multiple times

Northumbria was converted mainly due to the Saint monk Aidan 

Sussex was the last part of the Heptarchy to renounce paganism

In total it took about 100 yrs for England to be nominally converted


The Anglo-Saxon Christianity continued to be the Christianity of Rome until the Reformation

  • Includes the Latin mass, worship of saints, images and relics, monasteries, pilgrimages to the holy city, superstition
