Cell Structure
plasma membrane - provides support and protection to cell - controls what goes in and out of cell
nucleus - contains dna
nuclear envelope - double membrane, continuous with endoplasmic reticulum and controls entry in and out of cell
nuclear pores - gaps that allow passage of molecules
nucleoplasm - like cytoplasm for nucleus
chromatin - unwound chromosomes , form dna when cell not dividing
nucleolus - part of the nucleus that makes ribosomes
mitochondria - where aerobic respiration takes place
double membrane - controls what goes in and out of cell
cristae - large surface area for attachment of enzymes for respiration
matrix - contains proteins, lipids, dna and ribosomes
rough endoplasmic reticulum - have ribosomes on outer surface, synthesis of proteins & glycoproteins, large SA, pathway of transport of materials through cells
smooth endoplasmic reticulum - synthesis, stores and transports lipids and carbohydrates
Golgi apparatus - stacks of cisternae, with vesicles - proteins are modified, labelled and transported
lysosome - contains lysozyme and digestive enzymes - isolates lysozyme and hydrolyzes bacteria cell wall
ribosomes - made of ribosomal dna, protein synthesis
cell wall - supports cell and provides support , made of cellulose - microfibrils prevent bursting
chloroplast - site of photosynthesis ,
vacuole - fluid filled sac surrounded by tonoplast , supports plant by making it turgid
