Disciples

The number reminds you of the 12 tribes of Israel (represent a renewed Israel)

Had to learn the teachings and live the teachings

Jesus CHOSE them and called them by name to follow

Could be applied to anyone, male or female

Name means “to send” or “to be sent out”

Name means “learner”

Jesus commissioned the 12 to preach to the people about the coming of God's kingdom

Weren’t chosen, chosen by themselves.


Characteristics of the Twelve (what were their responsibilities?)

  • Jesus CHOSE them and called them by name to follow

  • Jesus expected them to learn carefully from is words and actions so that they could pass his message on to others


Main Characters: Peter, Thomas, Matthew, Judas

Peter:

  • Originally named Simon

  • He denied Jesus but repented

  • Later becomes major leader of church

  • Leader and spokesman of the Apostles

Thomas

  • Known as doubting Thomas

  • Would only recognize Jesus by seeing physical wound in his side

Matthew

  • Tax collector

  • His writings were used as a source for Gospel of Matthew

Judas 

  • Betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver

  • Traitor



What is discipleship?  What does it mean to be a disciple?

  • To be a disciple.. Jesus required Sacrifice.. Such as leaving one’s home or occupation to be with Jesus

  • Putting their own total faith in Jesus, not in possessions
