The Haber Process
Haber Process Overview
Purpose: Produces ammonia for explosives, clearing products, and fertilizers.
Chemical Reaction
Reversible Reaction:
N2 + 3H2 \rightleftharpoons 2 NH_3
Conditions for Reaction
Temperature: 450°C (trade-off between yield and reaction rate)
Pressure: 200 atmospheres (high pressure favors product formation due to fewer molecules in products)
Process Characteristics
Exothermic Reaction: Lowers yield at high temperatures.
Compromise: Optimal conditions are a balance between yield and reaction speed, hence 450°C is chosen.
Catalyst: Iron is used to enhance reaction rate.
Recovery and Recycling
Ammonia is formed as a gas and condenses in the condenser.
Unused reactants are recycled in the process to improve efficiency.
