Prokaryotic gene regulation

All body cells have the same genes, the structural and functional differences in cell types are determined by patterns of gene expression that result in different sets of proteins 

Gene regulation: The control of gene expression to ensure proteins are made at the right time, place and quantity. 

• Essential for cell function and response to environmental changes 

Housekeeping genes: are expressed in almost all cell types, they keep basic cell functions operating normally  

Regulated genes: may or may not be expressed at any given time or in a given cell type, expression of these genes are controlled
