Prokaryotic gene regulation

  • All body cells have the same genes, the structural and functional differences in cell types are determined by patterns of gene expression that result in different sets of proteins

  • Gene regulation: The control of gene expression to ensure proteins are made at the right time, place and quantity.

    • Essential for cell function and response to environmental changes

  • Housekeeping genes: are expressed in almost all cell types, they keep basic cell functions operating normally

  • Regulated genes: may or may not be expressed at any given time or in a given cell type, expression of these genes are controlled
