Reflexive Verbs

Definition

• Reflexive verbs are verbs where the subject performs an action on itself.

• Many daily routine verbs are reflexive, but other verbs can also be reflexive.

• Example: Yo me lavo las manos (I wash my hands). It would be odd if someone else washed your hands for you.

Reflexive Pronouns

• To use a reflexive verb, you must use a reflexive pronoun.

• The reflexive pronoun must match the subject of the sentence.

• The reflexive pronouns are:

  • Yo - me

  • Tú - te

  • Él/ella/usted - se

  • Nosotros/as - nos

  • Ellos/ellas/ustedes - se

Conjugating Reflexive Verbs

1. Remove the -ar, -er, or -ir ending from the infinitive form of the verb.

2. Add the correct reflexive pronoun in front of the verb.

3. Conjugate the verb as usual.

• Example: Lavarse (to wash oneself)

  • Yo me lavo

  • Tú te lavas

  • Él/ella/usted se lava

  • Nosotros/as nos lavamos

  • Ellos/ellas/ustedes se lavan

• Example: Levantarse (to get oneself up)

  • Yo me levanto

  • Tú te levantas

  • Él/ella/usted se levanta

  • Nosotros/as nos levantamos

  • Ellos/ellas/ustedes se levantan

Stem-Changing Reflexive Verbs

• Some reflexive verbs are also stem-changing verbs.

• Stem-changing verbs have a change in the stem (the part of the verb before the ending).

• The stem change occurs in all forms except the nosotros/as form.

• After changing the stem, regular endings are added.

• These verbs are also known as "boot" verbs because if you draw a line around the forms that change on a verb chart table, it will look like a boot.

Types of Stem Changes

• There are 4 main types of stem changes:

  1. u \rightarrow ue

  2. o \rightarrow ue

  3. e \rightarrow ie

  4. e \rightarrow i

• Example: Jugar (o -> ue)

  • Yo juego

  • Tú juegas

  • Él/ella/usted juega

  • Nosotros/as jugamos

  • Ellos/ellas/ustedes juegan

Conjugating Stem-Changing Reflexive Verbs

• Follow the same rules as regular reflexive verbs.

• The stem change occurs in all forms except the nosotros/as form.

• Example: Dormirse (o -> ue)

  • Yo me duermo

  • Tú te duermes

  • Él/ella/usted se duerme

  • Nosotros/as nos dormimos

  • Ellos/ellas/ustedes se duermen

Common Mistakes with Reflexive Verbs

• Here are some practice sentences:

  1. Ella se peina el pelo. (peinarse)

  2. Tú te despiertas a las ocho. (despertarse e-ie)

  3. Mi hermano y yo nos levantamos muy tarde. (levantarse)

  4. Yo me baño después de nadar. (bañarse)

  5. Pablo y Enrique se afeitan. (afeitarse)

  6. Mi padre se pone la chaqueta cuando hace frío. (ponerse)

  7. Las estudiantes se maquillan antes de ir al colegio. (maquillarse)

  8. Nosotros nos acostamos a las diez. (acostarse o-ue)

  9. Tú te cepillas los dientes. (cepillarse)

  10. Ellos se duermen temprano. (dormirse o-ue)

Multiple Verbs in a Sentence

• If you need to use a reflexive verb in its infinitive form, you have two options:

  1. Leave the reflexive pronoun attached to the end of the infinitive and change it to match the subject.

  2. Move the reflexive pronoun to the front of the conjugated verb and change it to match the subject.

• Important: NEVER conjugate the reflexive verb in these cases.

• Examples:

  • I want to take a shower: Yo quiero ducharme. / Yo me quiero duchar.

  • She is going to put on makeup: Ella va a maquillarse. / Ella se va a maquillar.

Practice with Multiple Verbs

1. Yo necesito (levantarse):

   • Yo necesito levantarme.

   • Yo me necesito levantar.

2. Tú tienes que (despertarse):

   • Tú tienes que despertarte.

   • Tú te tienes que despertar.

3. Nosotros tenemos que (quedarse):

   • Nosotros tenemos que quedarnos.

   • Nosotros nos tenemos que quedar.

Reflexive or Non-Reflexive?

• Some verbs can be reflexive or non-reflexive, depending on whether the subject is performing an action on itself or someone/something else.

• Examples:

  • I wash my hands (reflexive): Yo me lavo las manos.

  • I wash the dog (non-reflexive): Yo lavo el perro.

  • María lays down (reflexive): María se acuesta.

  • María lays the baby down (non-reflexive): María acuesta al bebé.

Practice Determining Reflexivity
