Key Concepts

  • What is a character foil?

  • The opposite of two characters. A character who contrasts/differs with another character in a way that highlights their personalities and traits. Not antagonist and protagonist but different personalities, different opinions, different goals. 

  1. Write down the character foils in Romeo and Juliet 

Mercutio and Romeo. 

Mercutio is crazy and outgoing while Romeo is more calm and introverted. 

  • What is tone? 

  • Attitude/feeling that a writer expresses toward the subject matter or the audience in a piece of writing. Shown through the writer’s choice of words, sentence structure and overall style 

  • What is theme in English classes? 

The central idea, message or underlying meaning in a literary work. Represents the deeper concept that the author is hinting at. The author explores themes related to universal human experiences, morals, or issues.

  • What is dramatic irony? 

    1. Example of Dramatic Irony in Act 3

  • The audience knows that Romeo had come and consummated the marriage between him and Juliet but the Capulets do not know that they are even married. 

  1. Example of Dramatic Irony in Act 4

  • The audience knows that Juliet is only “sleeping” because she drank a potion while her family members believe she is dead. 

  • The audience knows that Juleit went to Friar Laurence to seek help to escape the marriage with her and Paris but her family members believe she has gone to Friar Laurence to confess. 

  • The audience knows that the wedding plans are pointless and that the nurse will not find Juliet all prepared but Lord Capulet is still preparing the wedding plans still.

  • What is the difference between universal ideas and theme? 

Universal Idea: Universal ideas refer to broad, fundamental concepts or experiences that are common to all people, regardless of culture, time period, or place. These ideas are part of the human experience and are not tied to any specific story or text.

Ex: Love, Violence, Honesty, Freedom

Theme: The theme is the specific message or underlying idea that an author explores in a particular work. It is a more focused statement or insight that reflects the author’s perspective on a universal idea. A theme develops through the events, characters, and narrative of a specific story.

Ex: Treat others the way you want to be treated, Never judge a book by its cover

Important Themes:

Explain what you think the message is that we are supposed to take away from these universal ideas. 

Love/Romance: Love has both a negative and positive side.

  • Love can be joyful but also tragic.

Fate/Destiny: Love controls fate. 

  • Because Romeo and Juliet fell in love, their fate was changed. 

Family/Duty: Love can lead to disloyalty to family. 



  1. Act and Scene Summaries: for each Act, explain 3-5 significant events that occurred (ACT 1-2 ARE NOT ON TEST)

    • Act 3: 

-Tybalt and Mercutio die as they fight. Tybalt-Romeo, Mercutio- Tybalt

-Romeo gets banished from Verona.

-Romeo and Juliet compsant their marriage. m


  • Act 4: 

- Juliet expresses how she doesn’t want to get married and Capulet says he will disown her if she doesn’t

-Capulet moves the day of the wedding from Thursday to Wednesday.

-Juliet gets a potion from Friar Laurence to make her appear dead escape the marriage.

  • Act 5: 

-Nurse finds Juliet “dead” on her wedding day. 

-The wedding turns into a funeral

-Romeo hears about Juliet’s death and goes to Verona

-Romeo could not get the letter that Juliet is not actually dead and buys a poison to kill himself.

-Paris attacks Romeo when he arrives at Juliet’s tomb and Romeo kills him.

-Romeo goes inside the tomb and kills himself by drinking the poison.

-Juliet wakes up and finds Romeo dead. And desperately tries to kiss the poison off his lips. It doesn’t work so then and she ehars people coming and so she kills herself with Romeo’s dagger.

-Everyone sees the loss of Romeo and Juliet. Montague and Capulet end the feud and decides to create a golden statue for them.

What is a dependent clause? 

  • A group of words that contains a subject and a verb but cannot stand alone as a complete sentence because it does not express a complete thought. Instead, it needs an independent clause to make sense.

What is an independent clause? 

  • A group of words that contains a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a complete sentence. 

What is a comma splice? 

  • When two independent clauses (complete sentences) are joined together with only a comma, without an appropriate conjunction or punctuation to properly separate them.

What is a run-on sentence? 

  • When a sentence is way too long and should either have a comma or a period to break it up. Usually doesn’t make sentence and the sentence has several “and’s

Write an example of a sentence being too wordy and then write it again with correct grammar:  

Today I went to the store and bought ice cream with my friends after I finished my test for history and the ice cream was probably the best ice cream I had in years because it was my favorite ice cream flavor which is chocolate chip and it also had the best chocolate chunks i have ever had in my life.
