Teaching, Learning, Assessment Cycle

  • Continuous loop: Plan → Teach → Assess
    • Plan: desired learning, prior knowledge, resources, time
    • Teach: strategies, teacher & student actions
    • Assess: evidence of learning, lesson effectiveness

Planning Essentials

  • Context: student number, year level, lesson length, environment, resources
  • Learning Experience Plan (LEP) = roadmap of objectives, activities, assessment
  • Align with AITSL Standards 2 & 3

Learning Goals (LGs)

  • Derived from curriculum content descriptions
  • Specific, explicit, measurable; 1–2 per lesson
  • Written using ABCD structure:
    • Audience – who learns
    • Behaviour – observable action (verb)
    • Condition – materials/strategy (using, given)
    • Degree – success criterion (accuracy, repetitions)

Learning Experience Structure

  • Introduction
    • Purpose: context, motivate, activate prior knowledge
    • Keep concise; use image, object, music, story, focus question, role-play
  • Body
    • Active tasks linked to real life; appropriate challenge
    • Plan: student actions, teacher instructions, monitoring, questions, assessment
    • Manage transitions (when, what, who) for seamless flow
  • Conclusion
    • Allocate time; revisit LGs; gauge achievement; inform next lesson
    • Use prompts for reflection and summarising

Instruction & Explanation Techniques

  • Clear, concise language; model actions
  • Check understanding through questions & observation
  • Engage and motivate while explaining concepts

PEx Day 6 (Small-Group Teaching)

  • Teach ≤ half-class on 15 May (≥20 min)
  • Content aligns with mentor teacher’s plans; use LEP template
  • Back-up plans for weather, timing, difficulty; verify resources & routines

  • Explore LEP template

  • Practise writing LGs
  • Negotiate lesson focus with mentor teacher; obtain feedback next week
