Communication Oct 22, 2024

  • we communicate from birth, think of how babies communicate, even before they can actually talk

Channels, Noise, and Setting (sl.6)

  • noise is anything that disrupts a message being sent, received, or understood

    • e.g. Dr. Duke had an online class where she called on a student to answer a question, and she said she honestly didn’t know bc she was in the car. So Dr. Duke was annoyed.

    • Then, she called on another student, they said they were in that same car, but they were otw to the hospital bc their baby is sick and needs to go to the ER

    • then, Dr. Duke was less annoyed bc that info changed the way the situation seemed. So it wasn’t for nothing.

    • Their noise was the stress of being in the car, worrying about the baby

    • Dr. Duke’s stress was the typical stereotype of why people don’t know an answer or are distracted, clouding her initial judgement on the students
