Video 1 - Main Idea
Whats the best way to learn, using effective learning strategies like a persons beliefs on how they learn sufficiently
EX- things to not do are: go on your phone and create distractions every 20 minutes, skim over chapter, read the chapters day before quiz or exam, and say you can’t do it when you just need to practice and put forth effort. DONT BE OVERCONFIDENT
EX - things your should do are: read chapters well before test so you have days to review, put effort in and do example problems, study in quiet place no distractions and phone on scilent
Video 2 - Main Idea
Most imprtant factor of learning and variables of learning - What you think about while studying
Kinds of learning - Intentional & Incidental / Shallow & Deep
Intent to learn has no effect, but deep processing groups learned more than the shallow strategy groups
Depth of procesing matters (shallow - meaningless processing like memorizing & deep- meaningful processing like application)
Video 3 - Main Idea
Cognitive Principle for Optimizing Learning
How to achieve deep processing: elboration/how it relates to other things, distinctivness/how to specify it or whats different, personal experience, appropriate to retrieve and apply
automaticity - ability to perform a task quickly, efficiently, and without much thought
overlearning - practicing new skills past the priciple of mastering
Video 4 - Main Idea
Study Strategies
research based strategies - question gneration/creat quesrions of material to generate examples, creat concept map using nodes and links, practice retreiveing and using the information that the teacher wants you to know and apply, take notes of key points & retreival ques & engage in the class
note taking allows you to learn on a deep level not shallow
record the lecture if possible to refer back to
Video 5 - Main Idea
Preparation for exam and what did you do
Do’s - examine how you prepare, review past exams figure out what you did wrong (did you have difficulty on a specific topic or all topics), look at errors in notes and exam, talk to professor about what you can do better and open for different ways of studying, examine your own study habits
Basic Strategies - minimize distractions, attend class, space out study time, dont let classes slide to get caught up on others, follow instructions
Don’t - wait until end of semester to get help, don’t fall back on classes, don’t cram information
