Eukaryotic gene regulation 

• Promoter= region right before (upstream) the transcriptional unit that have initiator sequences that are important for starting transcription

  • DNA sequence where RNA polymerase binds

• TATA box: initiator sequence in promoter (transcription factors bind) (RNA Poly II transcription factor complex)

• Promoter Proximal Region= upstream of the promoter that contain regulatory sequences

  • Regulatory proteins bind (inhibit or enhance transcription) 

• Enhancer= regulatory sequence far from the transcriptional unit (promoter) that regulatory proteins bind to enhance or inhibit transcription

  • DNA sequence increases transcription
