What is TOK?

Core theme: Knowledge and the The Knower

  • More focused on 2nd order questions

  • This theme explores the relationship between the individual and the nature of knowledge, delving into how personal experiences and perspectives shape our understanding of the world.

  • TOK isn’t a philosophy course!!

    • it relates to real life!

    • Helps students develop critical thinking and analytical skills

      • Question what we know

How is TOK graded?

  • 11th grade: TOK exhibition → Select 3 objects + 1/35 IA topics to write about and with that explain how TOK concepts manifest in the real world

    • Graded by teacher(McGowan) first → IB picks 3-4 to grade → Final grade either stays same, bumped up, or lowered based on IB critiques(normally stays same)

  • 12th grade: TOK essay → 1,600 word essay graded by IB pick 1/6 essay topics

    • reflect on how we know what we know  → use various AOKs and Ways of Knowing to support argument(s)

1st Order Questions VS 2nd Order Questions(Don’t need to know for quiz)

1st Order: directly about world

  • narrow scope

  • related to specific aspect of AOK

  • typically ask: “What do we know”

  • descriptive + factual

2nd Order: process of finding out about world

  • broad scope

  • related to 1+ entire AOK

  • typically ask: “How do we know”

  • analytical + debatable

Example: Class reading George Orwell’s 1984 discussing nature of newspeak as language

  • 1st order question: Should Governments allow free access to knowledge

  • 2nd order question: In what ways foes the limiting of knowledge by authority help/hinder progress of knowledge?
