The period of 1865 to 1898 saw a massive change in the agricultural West: the introduction of machines in farming.
Increased crop production: With machines like the mechanical reaper and combine harvester, farmers could plant and harvest more crops than before. For example, corn and wheat production roughly doubled between 1870 and 1900.
Decline of small farmers: Smaller farmers couldn't compete with large industrial farmers who could afford the new machines. This led to many small farms folding, with bigger farmers buying them out.
As a result of increased crop production, the law of supply and demand kicked in.

Railroad problems: Railroad owners charged high prices for shipping crops to market, making it difficult for farmers to make a profit.
In response to low crop prices and railroad problems, the National Grange Movement emerged in 1868.
The Grange soon became a political force, pushing for laws to regulate railroad rates and abusive corporate practices.
Granger Laws: A set of laws passed in midwestern states, including the Commerce Act of 1886, which required railroad rates to be "reasonable and just" and established the Interstate Commerce Commission to enforce them.

In the years following the Civil War, there were many who sought to “remake” the south by modernizing and industrializing it. Prior to industrialization, Americans made things either to use themselves or to be sold locally, or at most regionally. During this period, Americans began mass-producing goods to be sold all over the world.

Populist Party: sought to work for the people and correct the concentration of economic power held by elite banks and trusts. became an influential third-party which represented the will of the “common man” and criticized “privileged elites” → while populist party never gained true traction, many argued that they provided the preface to the progressive movement.
Omaha Platform: published in 1892, advocated for political and economic reforms, including:
Direct election of senators
Initiatives and referendums
Unlimited coinage of silver
Graduated income tax
Eight-hour workday
Political Machines: groups of people who controlled urban politics, often through corrupt means.
Tammany Hall: the most famous political machine, run by Boss Tweed, which organized the needs of businesses, immigrants, and the poor, but also stole millions of dollars through schemes of deceit and fraud.
Sherman Antitrust Act: law passed by congress in 1890 which empowered the government to prevent the formation of massive monopolies and trusts. These corporations were adverse to competition, and against the best interest of the American consumer. the act had little effect because it failed to identify exactly what a ‘trust’ is.
despite the fact that women had begun to recieve considerable education, they were still denied basic social equality, including the right to vote → women during the progressive era led a new era of social movements, such as; temperance, women’s suffrage, and educational reforms → This wave of reformers would be successful in attaining the 28th amendment (prohibition) and the 19th amendment (womens suffrage)
one of the most important reformers of the progressive era was Jane Addams, wou founded a Hull House (provided a place for immigrants to live, gain some education, and learn some basic skills while they got established in America) for immigrants in Chicago → Addams’ work was reflective of the greater Social Gospel—the belied that it was the duty of the wealthy to improve the lives of the destitue through charitable donations and volunteering→ Addams later pushed for legislative reform on child labor laws, and became a charter member of the NAACP
Ida Tarbell, a prominent muckraker, whose father had been put out of business by John D. Rockefeller’s monopoly—standard oil → wrote an important exposé chronicling the ruthless and unfair business practices of Rockfeller called “The History of the Standard Oil Company” → Tarbell’s work attacked Rockefeller’s character and ultimatley contributed to the break up of his monopoly.
Carrie Nation became a popular figure for the Women’s Christian Temperance Union for terrorizing saloons with her hatchet → prohibition became another reform movement spearheaded by women; the WCTU gained in membership greatly in the Progressive Era → theses reformers scored a major victory with the adoption of the 18th amendment in 1920, which established Prohibiton
the womens suffrage movement found new momentum behind leader Susan B. Anothony and Elizabeth Cady Staton → the push for womens suffrage at the Seneca Falls Concention in 1848 had taken a back seat to the Civil War, and Reconstruction, and gained momentum again during the Prograssive Era → women would finally earn their long awaited right to vote in 1920 with the 19th amendment to the constitution.
