XYZ Affair-1798
FRENCH REVOLUTION:
Beginning not long after the American revolution, the French chose to rebel against the traditional monarchy, and sought after a new republic. The French wanted to establish a democracy where power was in the hands of the people, not ruling powers.
PROCLAMATION OF NEUTRALITY: 1793
President George Washington signs a document declaring the neutrality of the United States throughout the French Revolution.
JAY’S TREATY: 1794
To end the harassment of American ships by the British, John Jay is sent to Europe to cooperate with the British and therefore negotiate a treaty.
WASHINGTON’S FAREWELL ADDRESS:
As George Washington leaves office, he writes a letter of his leaving absence, addressing that America should continually stay neutral in regards to the French Revolution.
XYZ AFFAIR:
As 3 delegates are sent to France to compromise with the French, they come into contact with 3 French diplomats, coining the names of ‘X’, ‘Y’, and ‘Z’. These mysterious delegates would ask for bribes from the Americans, and eventually, news of what was happening came about within America, and established even more foreign conflict.
