BONES TERMINOLOGY

Angle – a projecting or sharp corner

Border – the outer part or edge

Canal – a relatively narrow tubular channel or passageway

Condyle – large smooth rounded process for articulation

Crest/Ridge – an elongated prominence

Epicondyle – smaller condyle or process above a condyle

Facet – smaller nearly flat articular surface

Fissure – a narrow slit or cleft

Foramen – hole, opening in a bone through which blood vessels and/or nerves usually pass

Fossa – shallow depression

Fovea – rounded depression or pit

Groove – elongated depression or furrow

Head –an enlargement on the end of a bone, often rounded

Line – a less prominent ridge

Linea – a narrow ridge

Meatus – a tube like passageway within a bone

Notch – indentation in a bone (often deep and at the edge of a bone)

Process – a prominent projection on a bone

Ramus – a structure given off from a larger one

Sinus – a cavity or hollow space within a bone

Spine – a pointed slender process

Styloid – like a stylus

Sulcus – linear groove

Trochanter – a large, somewhat blunt process

Tubercle – small process

Tuberosity – large, roughened process
