  1. Opposition to Mercantilism

  • The colonists did not want to be part of the british mercantile system

  • Mercantilism : an economic (eco-nom-mic)system in which mother country exploits its colonies for their wealth, natural resources and __markets-__place where you buy,sell or trade goods

  • The purpose of the mercantile system was to enhance the wealth of great britain by limiting/regulating the colonists trade with other countries

  • All of the colonists wealth, trade,and natural resources were controlled by great britain

  1. Opposition to British Taxes

  • Stamp Tax : a tax on all printed goods, (newspapers,legal documents,magazines,playing cards)(direct tax-is a tax on goods produced and circulated within the 13 colonies)

  • The colonists responded to the stamp tax by boycotting —-> colonial unity

  • Tea Act : a tax on tea

-led to boston tea party(samuel adams/sons of liberty)

The colonists in opposition coined the phrase:”No taxation without representation’’

They refused to pay taxes unless their views were represented in the British parliament

Salutary Neglect

  • Due to the overwhelming size of the 13 colonies,Great Britain was unable to rigidly enforce its mercantile and taxation policies.

  • __Due Process:__the proper and fair administration of the law once you have been accused of a crime

  • The colonists were often jailed without the benefits of trials and lawyers

  • Miranda Rights: ‘’You have the right to remain silent .you have the right to an attorney, if you can't afford one, the court will appoint one

  • In a representative government, the people write their own laws and elect their leaders in a democratic fashion

  • Instead king george lll had all political and economic power (monarch) (‘’consent of the government’’)

  • Representative governments usually have written constitutions and respect for the rule of law

  • Representative Governments are also known as republican governments
