Key question 1.13 - football hooliganism

Gang violence at football matches became a problem in the 1970s because rival fans fought each other under the influence of alcohol.

It is also associated with a general lack of respect for authority that started in the 1950s and the emergence of a generation gap.

Membership of gangs was like belonging to a tribe and violence was accepted.

Many were run by middle-class men who had the money to evade capture by the police.
