Nat Turner

Was an enslaved person who led the only successful slave rebellion in the south. As a result, this rebellion led to harsher laws restricting enslaved people’s rights. This rebellion also became a symbol of resistance against slavery.

Frederick Douglass

Born a slave in Mayland, escaped slavery and became a writer, abolitionist. Most famous for his autobiography, and his/her newspaper, called the North Star. Also advocated for women’s rights.

William Lloyd Garrison

From New England, was a prominent abolitionist journalist, and social reformer. They are most famous for founding and publishing The Liberator, an anti-slavery newspaper. Also co-founded the American Anti-Slavery Society. Also supported women’s rights

Elijah Lovejoy

Born in Maine, was a dedicated abolitionist, started in Missouri, a slave state, where he was an editor of the St. Louis observer, but faced much backlash which forced him to move to Illinois, but ultimately killed by a pro-slavery mob while defending his press, making him a martyr for the abolitionist.

Harriet Beecher Stowe

Born in CT, child of a famous reformer, abolitionist, inspired by christianity wrote the famous novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. This book had a huge impact on people’s opinions about slavery and was ver famous in england.

Tappan Brothers

Used their wealth to help fund the american-anti slavery society, and advocated for the immediate end of slavery. They were actively part of the Underground Railroad. They also donated money to integrated colleges and abolitionist newspapers.

David Walker

Was a free african-american who grew up in north carolina, witnessed racism throughout his/her life, is most famous for his/her pamphlet, Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World, which used christianity and urged enslaved individuals to revolt.
