Trolling

  • Defined as creating discord on the Internet by starting quarrels or upsetting people by posting inflammatory or off-topic messages in an online community

  • Internet troll - a user who strives to enrage/annoy another user via social media

  • Characteristics:

    • Flooding - non-sensical message spam

    • Profanity

    • Spam - links specifically

    • Bullying

    • Multiple IPs

    • Online vandalism

    • Inflammatory - attack on brands

Cyberstalking

  • Stalking - the repeated uninvited monitoring and/or intrusion into the life and activities of a victim

Mis/Disinformation

  • Disinformation is “fake news” or false, inaccurate or misleading information intended to deceive or mislead

  • Misinformation is the spread of false or inaccurate information that is not deliberately created or distributed to deceive

  • Why is it effective/believable?

    • Heuristics - quick approximations that are not fully rational

    • Language

    • Source

    • Visceral response

  • Circular reporting - journals/newspapers reporting misinformation, another journal reporting this and spreading it, the former journal referencing the spread as evidence
