Diagnostic- identify physiological, anatomical, or biomechanical limitations. Usually done with an interview, lab work, images, and clinical testing 

Interventions- correct the identified problem. Might be entirely medical, or have some therpudic agents


International classification of functioning, disability, and health (ICF) model

Model focuses incorporates the medical/physical approach but also the psychosocial approach 

activity/function is the core of the model  

Focus on what the patient can do, and diminishes stigma 


Rehabilitative therapeutic exercise- goal is to restore lost function due to injury, disease, or behavioral traits. 

  • First step to get to baseline function where you help injured people 


habilitative therapeutic exercise- goal is to acquire skills/functions considered normal or expected for specialized fitness goals 

  • Where u help healthy people get more fit depending on their goals 


Medical and allied health professionals 


Inpatient- 2 types 

  1. Hospitalization 

  2. Resedential 


Outpatient clinic setting- reserved for places where the patient doesnt stay overnight, but people might be reluctant to get treatment 


Sport team setting- athletic training clinics or training rooms are where athletes can got o get treatment 


Private practice- very appealing to be your own boss, but must have financial assistant to start. 



Athletic trainers- responsible for prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehab of athletic injuries 

  • Must get masters and take certification test


Clinical exercise physiologist- cardiac, pulmonary, and metabolic disease care. Testing and deliver cardiovascular conditioning programs 

  • Grad degree and specialized course certification 

  • Masters or doctorate and cpr and 600 plus hours

 

Occupational therapist- helps with physical, emotional, or mental disability restore or develop maximum level of independence by emphasizing acquisition and retention of functional skills 

  • Pt certifications, master degree or doctorate 

  • 2 yr OT program 


Physical therapist - provides rehabilitative care to a diverse patient population with a wide range of injuries, illnesses, and disaease 

  • Doctoral degree program, PT special certifications, state license 


Therapeutic recreation specialist- treats people w physical, cognitive, or emotional disabilities to restore function and reduce the effects of disability and develop independence. Utilize leisure activities to restore function 

  • Bach degree emphasis on therapeutic recreation, internship, and pass national cert exam


Orthotists and prosthetists-blend of health care, engineering, and fabrication. Develop, build, and fit braces and artificial limbs to enable patient function 

Orthotists- fabricate braces and splits 

Prosthetists- create and fit artificial limbs 

  • Master degree, residency, pass national exam


Physical therapist assistant- delivers care under a direction of PT and must be regularly evaluated 

  • 2 yr program and state license 


Clinically oriented- devise and develop therapeutic exercise plans and are called on to solve problems and make decisions 

Ex: PT or OT

Technically oriented- are experts at performing specific sets of skills 

Ex: PTA
