The Past Conditional

  • Use the past conditional to express an action that would have occurred in the past
  • Formed with a conditionnel form of avoir or etre and the past participle of the main verb

  • Past conditional aimer + [infinitive] = would have like to

  • Past conditional devoir + [infinitive] = should have

  • Past conditional pouvoir + [infinitive] = could have

  • Past conditional vouloir + [infinitive] = would have liked to

  • Conditionnel/past conditional with the expression au cas où (in case)

    • Prends ton portable au cas où le train arriverait en retard
  • Past conditional can act as a future perfect in the past, describing events that were to have happened in a later point
