1.7 Regional Analysis Notes

A region is one or more distinctive characteristics or patterns of activity. The defining characteristic is dominant.

A formal region (uniform, homogenous) have some unifying physical or human characteristic like language, political system, ethnicity or faith.

Formal Region

A functional region (nodal) have a center of activity, or a node, and are often unified by transportation or communication networks

Functional Region

A perceptual region (vernacular) is defined differently by each person based on their own ideas or perceptions. These are “fuzzy” boundaries that are not precise.

Formal (Uniform) Regions- Are united by political, physical, cultural and economic traits. An area in which certain characteristics are found throughout the areas, they have shared trait(s) either physical or cultural

Functional (Nodal) Region- These regions are organized around a focal point and are defined by an activity, usually politically, social, or economic, that occurs across the region.

Perceptual (Vernacular) Regions- They are defined by the informal sense of place that people ascribe to them
