Lesson 4: Macromolecules and Reaction Types

Reaction Types

  • Neutralization
    : acid + base → salt + H2O

  • Condensation (Dehydration Synthesis)
: remove H2O (OH + H) to join molecules (anabolic)

  • Hydrolysis
: uses H2O (OH + H) to break down larger molecules into smaller ones

  • Redox
: reactions that involve the transfer of e- (gain and loss)

    • Loss Of Electrons (LEO)

    • Gain Of Electrons (GER)

      • “LEO the lion says GER”

    • any element by itself has an oxidation # of 0

    • elements in a compound have an ON depending on the formula and/or periodic table (# of valence e-)

    • oxidized element = reducing agent

    • reduced element = oxidized agent
