Weimar and Nazi Germany + Hitlers Rise to Power

Oh my god, honey, have you heard about the Weimar Republic? What a mess!

1.1 Establishment and Early Challenges

  • So, after that awful war, they tried to start something new, right? The Weimar Republic! But, darling, the terms they got from the Treaty of Versailles? Absolutely brutal! And no one could agree on anything, it was constant drama! Revolts everywhere — the Spartacists, then Kapp, then even that little Munich scuffle! And don't even get me started on the economy! They literally just printed money like it was going out of style — hyperinflation, can you believe it? My handbag cost a wheelbarrow full of cash!

1.2 The 'Golden Age' of Gustav Stresemann (1924-1929)

  • But then, gasp, Gustav Stresemann swooped in! He was like their knight in shining armor for a bit, you know? Suddenly, things were looking up! He got all these fancy plans — Dawes, Rentenmark, Young — to fix the money troubles. And internationally? He made them look respectable again! All those treaties, joining the League of Nations, even that Kellogg-Briand Pact thing where everyone promised not to start wars. For a while, everyone was just living! The art, the music… so chic!

1.3 Decline and Collapse (1929-1933)

  • But honey, you know how good times never last, right? 1929 hit, and it was over! The Great Depression! Everyone lost their jobs, total chaos! And the politicians? Ugh, they just kept signing things away, giving more power to the President. And guess who started sneaking into the spotlight? Those Nazis! Can you believe it? People were so desperate, they actually started listening to them!

2. Hitler's Rise to Power

  • Speaking of! That Hitler fellow! Oh, the drama!

2.1 Early Life and Ideology

  • So, he joined this little Nazi Party — very exclusive, apparently! And his book, Mein Kampf? Total tell-all, if you ask me! All about how his 'Aryan' people were better than everyone else, especially those poor Jewish folks — truly awful stuff. And he wanted more 'living space' — like, he needed more room, honey, for his big plans! Hated democracy, hated communists, and was still fuming over Versailles. Oh, and he thought he should be in charge of everything! The 'Führerprinzip,' they called it. So full of himself!

2.2 Exploiting Weakness

  • He really knew how to play on people's weaknesses, didn't he? That awful Depression was his golden ticket! And his little PR guy, Goebbels? Master manipulator, spreading all those crazy stories and posters. And then there were his 'Stormtroopers,' the SA — basically just big bullies, roughing up anyone who disagreed. Terrifying!

2.3 Electoral Success and Appointment as Chancellor

  • And wouldn't you know it, his party started winning seats like crazy! Can you imagine? Then, the ultimate tea, honey: on January 30, 1933, he was made Chancellor! Apparently, some old, stuffy conservative politicians thought they could control him. Like, 'Oh, he's just a puppet!' Honey, they had no idea!

3. Consolidation of Nazi Power (1933-1934)

  • And that's when things really took a turn for the worse, if you ask me.

3.1 Eliminating Opposition and Establishing Totalitarian Rule

  • First, there was that mysterious Reichstag Fire in February 1933! Suddenly, 'poof,' all our civil liberties were gone! And then, the next month, the 'Enabling Act' passed — basically giving him permission to do whatever he wanted without asking anyone! Dictatorship, just like that! And he just shut down all the other parties, all the trade unions, everything! 'Gleichschaltung,' they called it — basically, 'making everything the same,' meaning 'Nazi!'

3.2 The Night of the Long Knives (30 June - 2 July 1934)

  • But the real shocker? 'The Night of the Long Knives'! Can you imagine? June 30, 1934! He literally had his own SA leaders, like Ernst Röhm, eliminated! Said they were rivals, but really, he just wanted the army to be loyal only to him. So ruthless!

3.3 Death of Hindenburg and the Führer

  • And then, President Hindenburg, the old man, finally kicked the bucket in August 1934. And what did Hitler do? He just took over everything! Combined Chancellor and President, called himself 'Führer and Reich Chancellor'! And the army? They actually swore an oath personally to him! Ugh! That was it, darling — the end of the Weimar Republic dream and the start of his 'Third Reich.' Truly scandalous!
