- Ethnic Tradition - art forms are primarily influenced by the geographical location and the experiences of the Filipinos
- Spanish Colonial Tradition - art forms were primarily influenced by religion and secularization.
- Modern art - refers to the practice of art from the 1860s to 1960s. The main theme of art works at this time is national identity.
- Contemporary art - refers to the practice of art from the 1970s to the present. Contemporary arts mirror contemporary culture and society.
- The elements and principles of art are important not just to the artist but also to the viewer, to have a deeper understanding of an artwork.
- The Elements of art are space, line, shape, color, value, and texture.
- Space - refers to the distance between the area around and within shapes, forms, colors, and lines.
- Line - Vertical, curved, and diagonal are some representations of this element of art.
- Shape - This element of art refers to the two-dimensional figures.
- Color - refers to the way we see different shades and tones in pictures or paintings.
- Value - It refers to the lightness or darkness of colors.
- Texture - It pertains to the surface of an art piece.
- The Principles of art are proportion, harmony, variety, movement, rhythm, balance, and emphasis.
- Proportion - refers to the relationship of the size of elements in a body of art.
- Harmony - It is the unity of the artwork, specifically about the arrangement of the related elements.
- Variety - refers to the use of different qualities or instances of visual elements.
- Movement - is the illusion of motion in a painting, sculpture design, or in a piece of art.
- Rhythm - This principle of art refers to the repetition of certain elements that will produce a pattern in a piece of art.
- Balance - It refers to the even distribution of elements in a piece of art.
- Emphasis - refer to the greater impact given on a certain element.

- Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo - One of the greatest Filipino painters along with fellow painter Juan Luna in the 19th century.
- Two Filipino Art Style developed during the Spanish Era (Luna & Hidalgo)
- Miniaturismo art style that pays attention to the embroidery and texture of the costume.
- Letras y Figuras art style that uses letters with figures in everyday activity amidst a common background. Usually used in painting a patron’s full name.
- AMERICAN COLONIAL ART PERIOD (1898-1946)
- GUILLERMO TOLENTINO - He is considered the "Father ofPhilippine Arts" because of his great works like the famous "BonifacioMonument" symbolizing Filipinos cry for freedom and "The Oblation" in UP signifying academic freedom.
- PHILIPPINE MODERN ART(1946-1970)
- The support of the Philippine Government For the arts via the creation of theCultural Center of the Philippines During 1969 gave a venue for all artists to experiment and explore different art mediums.
- Philippine Contemporary Art (1980s to Present)
- It was on the on-set of the sudden rise of personal computers and new technology created a new art medium for the arts and human expression.
- CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS CLASSIFICATION
1. Visual Arts - Known as spatial arts because it is an art form that occupy space Includes: Painting, Sculpture and Architecture
- Graphic Arts - Visual art forms with length and width known as two-dimensional arts (2D Art)
- Plastic Arts - Visual arts with length, width and volume known as three-dimensional arts (3D Art)
2. Audio Visual Arts - Known as performing arts
3. Literary Arts - Art forms that are presented in the written mode and intended to be read
LESSON III - Contemporary Art Forms from the Regions / National Artists
- Visual art is an expression of artistic ideas through images, structures, and tactile work. Painting, sculpture, architecture, and film are examples of visual arts.
- Painting the expression of ideas and emotions, with the creation of certain aesthetic qualities, in a two-dimensional visual language.
- Sculpture is an art form in which hard or plastic materials are worked into three-dimensional art objects.
- Architecture is the art and practice of designing and constructing buildings
- Film is a form of visual art used to imitate experiences that communicate ideas, stories, or feelings with the use of moving images. It is also called a movie or motion picture.
- Literary arts are an expression of ideas through writing. Literary arts can be categorized as . poetry, prose, and drama
- Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material.
