Lesson 8: Supporting Mobile Devices
Lesson 8: Supporting Mobile Devices
Laptop Displays & Technologies
LCD: Common, low power, cost-effective, but difficult to achieve true black.
Backlighting: Fluorescent, LED, and others, with LED being more common.
Types:
TN: Good for gaming, poor viewing angles.
IPS: Better color, ideal for graphics.
VA: Balanced performance.
OLED: Thin, lightweight, great color, used in tablets/smartphones.
Wireless Networks in Laptops: Antennas in displays for 802.11/Bluetooth. Reconnect during repairs. Webcams/Microphones: Located at the top of the display for video calls. Older Backlights: CCFL (more power-consuming); newer models use LED backlighting. Hybrid Devices: Include touchscreen, stylus input, and support multiple input methods.
Connecting Mobile Devices
Wired:
USB: Type A, Mini B, Micro B, USB-C.
Apple Lightning: 8-pin, reversible, fast charging.
DB-9: Legacy serial connection, now converted to USB.
Wireless:
NFC: For mobile payments and access control.
Bluetooth: Common for audio devices.
Wi-Fi Hotspot: Phones acting as hotspots.
Mobile Device Accessories
Touch Pen/Capacitive Stylus: For precise input.
Active Stylus: Detects pressure, specific to devices (e.g., Apple Pencil).
External Drawing Pad: Adds touchscreen to non-touch devices.
Trackpads: Built-in or external via Bluetooth.
Audio Devices: Wired/Bluetooth headsets, external speakers.
Cameras/Webcams: Used for video calls.
Docking Stations: Simplify connection to peripherals.
Port Replicators: USB-based, quick connections.
Cellular Standards
2G: GSM (global) & CDMA (US-specific).
3G: Improved data speeds (megabits per second).
LTE (4G): Faster speeds (up to 300 Mbps).
5G: High-speed (10 Gbps) for IoT.
Mobile Hotspot: Phones can provide Wi-Fi; check for charges.
Mobile Device Connectivity
Bluetooth Pairing: Requires PIN for device security.
GPS Navigation: Uses satellites for location, enhanced with Wi-Fi/cell towers.
Mobile Device Management (MDM): Manages security, device configurations, and data syncing.
Mobile Device Configurations
Initial Setup: Basic settings, email setup may require cloud services.
iCloud: Syncs data across Apple devices.
Data Transfer: Control cellular/Wi-Fi usage.
Backup/Recovery: Restore data through cloud services.
Laptop Hardware
Troubleshooting: Repair challenges vary by manufacturer.
Components: Batteries, keyboards (replaceable), and memory (SO-DIMM).
Storage: SSDs offer faster performance; M.2 for smaller drives.
Wireless: Integrated in new laptops; upgradeable in older ones.
Authentication: Biometrics (face/fingerprint) and NFC for secure access.
