MIlitarism- every country wated a bigger army,navy & 

The biggest fighting power 


Alliances- typically, if your ally went ot war, you would have to follow suit. Regardless of the reason.


Imperialism-stronger countries wanting power over weaker countries. 


Nationalism- devotionn and sarong belief in ones country or nation 


Triple Entente - France, Russia, and Great Britain


Triple Alliance- pre-war treaty between austria hungary, germany,italy, and the ottoman empire 


Allied Powers- britain, france, russia, and eventually italy 


Central Powers- germany, austria hungary, ottoman empire, italy started here 


Archduke Franz Ferdinand- Prince of austria hungary, was assasinated by seria nationlist. 


Neutrality- Not picking a side in a debate or war


Lusitania- A German U-boat torpedoed the British-owned steamship Lusitania, killing 1,195 people including 128 Americans, on May 7, 1915. The disaster set off a chain of events that led to the U.S. entering World War I.


Unrestricted Submarine Warfare- Germany believed their submarines could sink any ship, and that any enemy or ally should avoid their waters. Doing this would ensure protection over their lands, a limit in trading and intimidate any other competitors. Although, it eventually led to making the U.S an official enemy after attacking their ships. 



Zimmerman Telegram- The zimmerman telegram was a communication device that allowed german and mexican leaders to communicate with one another. Germany offered to assist Mexico in taking over Texas if they helped them defeat the U.S. 



Liberty Bonds- citizens loaned money to governemt during the war. Could cash in afterwards


Selective Service Act 1917-  law that required men to register for military service 



Espionage and Sedition Acts- Laws that prohibited anyone from speaking ill of the u.s 


Schenck v United States- arrested for spreading newspapers against the U.S., telling people to resist and protest the draft. Said to be violation of 1st amendment. 


Armistice- a truce stopping a war 


Woodrow Wilson- creator of 14 point plan 


14 Points Plan- woodrow wilsons plan for world peace following ww1. 

Wilsion wanted to punish germany and stop future wars. 

Wanted to stope future wars and give more power to individual nations. - 

Wantedto give more power to individual nations and increase the power of the USA



Self-Determination- I want to decide” Anti imperialism. 


Paris Peace Conference- wining sides came together to chose loosing sides punishment. Aimed to destroy germany so they wouldn;t rebel again. 


Treaty of Versailles-  Germany is blamed for the war. They had to pay 33 billion in reparations, army was limited, lost allies with austria, and lost some colonies and land. 


League of nation - kept  to build world peace
