Components of fitness

There are 11 components of fitness:

The skill related 6 can be remembered with the acronym CRABSP

  • Coordination: The ability to use two or more body parts together
  • Reaction time: The time taken to respond to a stimulus
  • Agility: The ability to change the position of the body quickly and control the movement
  • Balance: The ability to maintain the body’s centre of mass above the base of support
  • Speed: The ability to put body parts into motion quickly
  • Power: The force output by your muscles in a given time

The other 5 are health related components:

  • Cardiovascular endurance: The ability of the heart, lungs and blood to transport oxygen around the body
  • Body composition: The percentage of bodyweight which is fat, muscle and bone
  • Muscular strength: The amount of force a muscle can exert against a resistance
  • Muscular endurance: The ability for a muscle to contract repeatedly without fatigue
  • Flexibility: The range of motion available at a joint
