Pericardium & Sanjiao Channels – Lecture Review
Pericardium Channel
- Pericardium-9 (P-9): Located at the top of the finger.
- Deep branch connects to the ring finger, linking with the Sanjiao channel.
- Pericardium channel has a total of nine points.
Primary Channel
- Originates in the center of the chest and connects to the pericardium.
- Descends along the three jiao (upper, middle, and lower), connecting to the Sanjiao channel.
- A branch emerges from inside the chest to the anterior axillary fold (near Pericardium-1).
- Arches over the axilla and follows the anterior medial aspect of the upper arm.
- Runs between the lung (lateral) and heart (medial) channels to the elbow crease where Pericardium-3 is located.
- Descends along the forearm, between the ulna and radius bones.
- Runs between the palmaris longus and flexor carpi radialis tendons.
- Travels into the palm and terminates at the tip of the middle finger (Pericardium-9).
- Another branch arises from Pericardium-8 and goes to the ring finger, connecting with the Sanjiao channel.
Luo Connecting Pathway
- Connects to the heart.
- Luo connecting point is Pericardium-6, which is about two "chin" above the wrist crease in the middle of the forearm.
- Ascends along the pericardium channel.
- Connects to the heart, indicating a relationship between the pericardium and the heart.
Divergent Pathway
- Branches from the primary channel in the axilla area.
- Enters the chest and communicates with the three jiao.
- Ascends to the nape of the neck behind the ear.
- Reconnects with the Sanjiao primary channel behind the ear.
Sinew Pathway
- Originates at the tip of the middle finger.
- Runs along the palm, wrist, and elbow area.
- Follows the anterior, inner, middle aspect to the axilla.
- Disperses over the chest and diaphragm.
- Spreads into the rib cage.
- Symptoms include cramping, straining, and breathing difficulties.
- Related to cardiovascular conditions.
- Connects with the pericardium and the Sanjiao channel.
- May connect with the spleen, liver, and gallbladder in the rib cage area (Pericardium-1).
Summary of Pericardium Channel
- Originates in the chest and descends through the diaphragm to the middle and lower jiao, connecting with the Sanjiao.
- According to the six channel theory, it has a relationship with the liver.
- A branch of the pericardium connects to the Sanjiao in the palm.
- The pericardium divergent channel connects to the Sanjiao across the jiao and then connects behind the ear.
- Pericardium-6 is the luo connecting pathway, a command point of the chest, and the confluence of Yin Wei. It connects to the heart.
- The pericardium channel originates in the chest, its diverging channel enters the chest, and the sinew channel disperses into the chest.
- Both the primary and divergent channels connect with the upper, middle, and lower jiao.
- The primary channel goes up and over the axilla, while the sinew channel comes in and under into the axilla, connecting with the rib cage.
- In the six channel theory, channels are paired based on their representation and the level to which issues affect the person.
- Taiyang is the most external yang pathway.
Function and Clinical Application
- The pericardium (Xinbao) is described as a membrane that surrounds the heart.
- Its primary function is to protect the heart from exterior pathogenic factors.
- Treats disorders of the heart zone: chest pain, heart pain, palpitations, or rhythm differences.
- Treats disorders of the spirit: the Shen is disturbed.
- Treating disorders of the heart, chest: pericardium six has a very strong affinity for the chest.
- Treat disorders of the upper and middle jiao usually due to qi stagnation of the liver.
- Can treat the disorders of the middle jiao, especially the stomach.
- The lateral costal region, that's a lot of the areas hypochondriac that we think about liver.
- The pericardium is a fire element, so it can treat febrile diseases.
- Treats the area of the axilla.
Pericardium Points

Sanjiao Channel
- Sanjiao channel, a Xiaoyang channel.
- Is the exterior related with pericardium.
- Has that six channel theory, it's connected to gallbladder.
- Sanjiao pathway has a total of 23 points.
- It's interior pathway.
- According to spiritual pivot, it descends all the way to u d 39.
Pathway of Sanjiao (Triple Burner) Channel
- Begins at the ulnar aspect of the tip of the ring finger, runs between the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones.
- Along the dorsum of the hand, travels up the posterior aspect of the forearm between the radius and the ulna.
- Between the loud and small intestine channels, traverses the olecranon all of the actually.
- And it continues up the the posterolateral aspect of the upper arm to the shoulder where it intersects your SI 12.
- As it travels towards the spine, it intersects UB 11 and then meets that D14 because all young channels meet at D 14.
- Ascends laterally to the highest point of the shoulder which is gallbladder 21 right here, and it descends anteriorly the supraclavicular fossa.
- Through stomach 12 and then comes into the middle of the breast at ren 17 going through the upper, middle, and lower jewel is actual organ.
Luo Connecting Point
- Sanjiao Luo connecting point is Sanjiao five, Wake one.
- We follow the upper, we proceed up the posterior aspect of the arm over the shoulder. And it converges with the pericardium channel in the chest.
# Divergent Channel - It starts in the head level.
- Branches to the vertex.
- And then it descends dispersing into the three jewels.
Sinew Pathway
- Begins at the ulnar side of the right finger.
- Binds it the back of the wrist. It binds at the elbow. It binds at the the of shoulder neck region.
- We sinew, and we come to this angle of the jaw where we descend and go to the root of the tongue as well as come to the outer canthus of the eye and come to the angle of the forehead.
It does connect with a lot of those points.
Sanjiao, the Fire Element
- The fire is energy to create transformation.
- Enables things to change, to help transform the fluid, to help move things through the body.
- Sanjao and pericardium are connected.
- Sanjiao gallbladder, the fact that they're both Xiaoyang pathways.
- The interior pathway of the San Jiao that descended descended through the upper middle and lower jowls, so really connecting those jowls, but also the organs in those connections we're gonna see.
- San Jiao channel goes around the ear, in front of the ear, and enters the ear.
- San Jiao is the Xiaoyang.
Fevers
- According to Sanjiao theory is concerned, points of the Sanjiao channel mainly treat febrile diseases affecting upper jowlung patterns and more in your exterior.
- Spiritual pivot and essential questions, these are two resources where Taiyang is the opening.
- Yongming is the closing, and Xiaoyang is the pivot where we go from outer to inner.
Sanjiao actions and functions
- Some of them are gonna help reduce fever. So it’s really good to clearing heat like from the exterior.
- We can clear heat from the neck, the throat, and the tongue.
- We can soothe the heart and calm the spirit.
- . Because san jiao and pericardium have a connection, some Sanjiao points can help with heart conditions due to heat like agitation, restlessness, mania, any disordered spirit.
- the three jows to help with, again, the movement of qi through the body, the transformation.
Sanjiao Points
Distal Points
- San Jiao 1, Guangchong : rushing past. Clear heat, expel wind, benefit the ears, eyes, and tongue
-Sanjao 2, Yemen the Fluid Gate, Ying Spring water.
Arm Points
- Sanzho 4: Waan Point, Original point and Yuan Source point, near bony landmark of ulna
- Sanjiao 5 Wei Guan, is an Loo Connecting point, expel wind + head wind
- Sanjiao 6 Jiao 6 Is located near radius, Fire Point for fever and constipations.
- Sanjiao 8 is a point that it’s for clearing channel but the use is not so often.
- Sanjiao 10. Is it an important point in the elbow so the Elbow need to be bend it otherwise it is not helpful at all.
Shoulder Point
-Sanjiao 15.
So Sangel 15 is technically between g v 21 and s I 13.
-Sanjiao16.
Head and Face points
- Sanjao 17: Is right behind the ear, and the way to needle it is going straight in as it will benefit the whole head and face.
-Sanjiao 17. Eighteen. 19, you see the kinda surrounding the ear and for way easier reference just remember to outline yours ears - Sanjiao19. Also treat any heat clearing symptoms. But way less often used. So don’1 be confuse is also the center of the mastoid process here.
