 What is a Scale of Analysis?

A scale of analysis is the level at which data is grouped, organized, or displayed on a map. Scales of analysis can be either global, local, regional, or national.

Global Scale of Analysis

Global information is shown on a map. The map has no country borders.

Regional Scale of Analysis

Data is grouped into regions/continents. For example, in the picture above, the continents are divided by colors.

National Scale of Analysis

Data is grouped into countries. The country borders are used to define the scale of analysis. No country borders? It’s not a national scale.

Local Scale of Analysis

Data is grouped into small units. For example, a map of the U.S. would be a local scale of analysis because it would have state boundaries.
