What are all the elements contained in carbohydrates?

• Carbon

• Hydrogen

• Oxygen

• Water contains hydrogen and oxygen.

• 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

• The letter "c" is used to represent carbon

• The letter "o" is used to represent oxygen

• Starches/ complex carbohydrates, sugars, and fibers.

What are all the elements contained in protein?

• Carbon

• Hydrogen

• Oxygen

• Sulfur

• Nitrogen

Mouth - moistens food so it moves more easily through the esophagus into your stomach.

• Pharynx - delivers food and liquid to your esophagus, which sends them on to your stomach.

• Esophagus - transport food entering the mouth through the throat and into the stomach.

• Liver - to make and secrete bile and to process and purify the blood containing newly absorbed nutrients that are coming from the small intestine.

• Stomach - holds the food and mixes it with acid and enzymes that continue to break the food down into a liquid or paste.

• Gallbladder • stores bile, a thick liquid that's produced by the liver to help us digest fat.

• Pancreas - produces enzymes that help to digest food, particularly protein.

• Large Intestine - absorbs water and changes the waste from liquid to stool.

• Small Intestine - break down food, absorb nutrients needed for the body, and get rid of the unnecessary components.

• Rectum - a holding area for the stool.

• Anus - to detect rectal contents, whether they are liquid, gas, or solid, and then control when stool should/shouldn't be excreted from your body.

Digestive System

The acid found in your stomach is called hydrochloric acid also known as "hcl".

It facilitates the enzyme pepsin that speeds up the digestion of protein.

Organs that secrete substances needed for the chemical digestion of food but through which food does not actually pass as digested.

Vocabulary -

• Nutritional deficiencies

• Balanced diet

• Rickets

• Diet

• Kulashiakare

• Dietary pyramid

Differentiate between a diet and a balanced diet.

Answer - A balanced diet is one that provides the body with all the important and essential nutrients in order to function appropriately. A balanced diet refers to a diet that provides all the essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals in appropriate proportions to support overall health and well-being.

5 nutritional groups

• Protein - helps repair damaged cells (main function)

• Minerals -

• Carbohydrates - to provide the body with energy (main function)

• Fats - give your body energy and support the cell function (main function)

• Vitamins - helping to fight infection, wound healing, making our bones strong and regulating hormones (main function)

• Vitamins are organic while minerals are inorganic.

• Alimentary Canal or The Gastrointestinal Tract

• Mechanical digestion physically breaks down food substances into smaller particles to more efficiently undergo chemical digestion

• Peristalsis is a process that pushes the food into the inter-house

• The stomach is the gastric phase of digestion

• Hydrochloric acid is the sound in the stomach

The small intestine:

Made up of three parts

• Ileum

• Duodenum

• Jejunum

• The purpose of the acid in the stomach is to get rid of - kill the excess bacteria and dirt.

• Hydrochloric acid is found in the stomach and is responsible for killing germs - bacteria and facilitates the enzyme pepsin as it speeds up the breaking down process of protein.

• Pathogens are germs or organisms that can cause diseases. (bad bacteria)

• Chyme is food that is found in the stomach.

• Bolus is food and saliva in a ball in your mouth.
