KCFD Clean Air Work Environment Guidelines

General Administrative Guideline Overview

  • The primary purpose of this General Administrative Guideline (GAG) is to establish and ensure a clean air work environment within all Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department facilities and vehicles.
  • The scope of this mandate is universal, applying to all Fire Department facilities and vehicles without exception.

Spatial Prohibitions and Exceptions

  • Smoking is prohibited in all Kansas City Fire Department facilities, except in specific areas officially designated as ‐SMOKING PERMITTED.‐
  • Designated smoking areas are located specifically on the apparatus bay floor.
  • As a general rule, smoking is prohibited within a distance of 5050' from any doorway leading to a living space.
  • Smoking is also prohibited within a distance of 5050' from any air handling equipment.

Vehicle Operations and Staffing Restrictions

  • Smoking is strictly prohibited in all KCFD vehicles under the following mandatory circumstances:
    • Situations where multiple personnel are assigned to the vehicle.
    • Situations where the vehicle is carrying passengers.

Enforcement and Signage Standards

  • It is the explicit responsibility of all fire officers to enforce the clean air policy.
  • Required signage for all facilities includes:
    • ‐NO SMOKING‐ signs must be clearly displayed at the entrance to all Fire Department facilities.
    • ‐SMOKING PERMITTED‐ signs must be displayed in the specific areas where smoking is authorized.

Tobacco Cessation Support Systems

  • To accompany the implementation of this GAG, the department encourages all tobacco users to participate in the KCFD Smoking Cessation Program.
