Body Positions
Prone: Patient is lying on stomach and back is straight. Doctors place patient like this to maximize their lungs.
Supine: Patient lying on back and back is straight.
Right Lateral Recumbent (AKA: Recovery Position): Patient is lying on side with arm to support head.
Fowler’s: Patient is sitting at a 75 degree angle.
Left Lateral Recumbent: Same thing as Right Lateral Recumbent but on left side.
Trendelenburg (AKA Shock Position): Legs are raised and higher than the head by ≥ 15 degrees. When patient goes into shock, brain needs blood, so they raise the legs to bring blood to brain.
Flexion: Decreasing the distance between two body parts
Extension: Increasing the distance between two body parts
Abduction: Moving away from the body
Adduction: Moving closer to the body
Circumduction: Being able to move a body part 360 degrees
