How to Extract DNA from Kiwi - Core Practical
- Use pestle and mortar to crush the kiwi - this breaks up the cell wall
- Add water, salt (DNA is insoluble to salt water but not water - makes sure it doesn’t dissolve, and salt also breaks through cell wall) and washing up liquid to a beaker (which breaks up the cell membrane and parts of the nucleus)
- Stir slowly until salt is dissolved
- Add kiwi to mixture
- Put beaker in hot water bathÂ
- Filter solution
- Drizzle ice cold ethanol around the beaker to attract (idk if thats the right word) the DNA which will look like limescale
- Use glass rod to lift out the white substance
