446/5 30 years truce Treaty between Athens and Sparta that ended the first Peloponnesian War. Athen’s had to give up Megara and Aigina became autonomous. 444 ostracism of Thuc’s son 440 Samian Revolt Athen’s sent ships under Pericles, repressed revolt. 433 Megarian decree Athens said Megara can’t use the Athenian harbor, which hurt Megara a lot because they are a trading power. This started when Athen’s sent a herold to Megara saying they are farming sacred land and Megara killed the herald. 431 Peloponesian war Started because Athens was growing in power, which scared Sparta. Athen’s kept provoking Sparta, mostly due to Pericles. Sparta really wanted to make peace but Athens was intent on going to war. 428/7 Mytilene (debate between Kleon and Diodstos) Mytilene revolted, Athens suppressed it. Kleon wanted to kill them all, Diodstos said that would be dumb. Diodstos wins but they are too late to save the first thousand. 425 Pylos + sphakteria (120 spartans) Athens starts building on Pylos, Sparta attacks. Athens wins and surrounds the Spartans on Sphacteria. They surrender and are taken as captives. 422 Amphipolis Thucydides tried to save the Athenian colony when he was a general, failed, was exiled and went to Sparta. 421 Peace of Nikias Peace between Sparta and Athens that ended the first phase of the Peloponnesian war. Both sides were required to give back what they got in the war, but some of Sparta’s allies did not want to do this (Thebans and Panactum). Amphipolis didn’t want to be in the Athenian empire and Sparta refused to make them. 418 Mantineia Athenians + Argives vs Spartans + Tegeans. Sparta wins and the Peloponnesian League goes back into place. 416 Melos 🍇 ☀ Melos was a colony of Sparta, and had been supplying Sparta with raisins. Athens sent a fleet to force them to be with Athens. Took the city, enslaved them, killed them. 415-13 Sicilian Expeditions The strategoi autokratores, Alcibiades, Nikias, and Lamachos. They wanted to take Syracuse, but Alcibiades convinced them to sail around first and look for allies. Alcibiades is called back and goes to Sparta instead. 414 Dekeleia Athen’s had camps at Olympium and Plemmyrium. Demosthenes planned a night attack with a special code word. The syracusans learn the word and start yelling it. Lots of naval battles, Athen’s starts losing, Demosthenes’ group is captured, Nikias’ group keeps going.
