Extra Safety Rules

1. Be prepared to work when you arrive at the laboratory. Familiarize yourself with the lab procedures before beginning the lab.

  1. Carefully follow all oral and written instructions. Preform only those activities assigned by your teacher. Never do anything in the laboratory that is not called for in the lab procedure or by your teacher.

  2. Notify your teacher if you have any medical problems that might be affected by any lab work, such as allergies or asthma.

  3. Never work in the laboratory without supervision.

  4. Never eat or drink in the laboratory

  5. Never smoke in the space

  6. Keep work areas clean at all times

  7. Unnecessary items should be brought to the storage room

  8. Wear appropriate clothing for working in the lab, Removes all loose garments and roll up long sleeves. Also remove loose accessories that can get in the way of the experiment.

  9. Avoid touching chemicals with your hands If chemicals do come in contact with your hands, wash the immediately/.

  10. Wear latex gloves when handling concentrated acids and bases.

  11. When mixing an acid and water, always add the acid to the water

  12. Carry glass tubing, especially long pieces, in a vertical position to prevent breakage and stabbing anyone.

  13. Always wear heavy gloves when inserting a piece of glassware such as tubing or a thermometer, into a stopper. Before inserting lubricate glass with water/glycerin.

  14. Use twisting motion with removing/inserting glassware --Never apply force --- Becomes stuck? Ask teacher

  15. No contact lens in lab / use glasses if can

  16. Always follow teacher directions

  17. Keep combustible materials away from open flames.

  18. Use wafting motion to smell something -- Never smell directly

  19. Always use insulating pad for hot objects

  20. Never touch hot glass -- Wait till it cools down

  21. Be Careful with gas burners

  22. Always turn off all materials when not in use

  23. Use a fume hood when needed

  24. Clean workspace always at the end of class
