Era of good feelings:
FEDS AND ANTI FEDS
- Alien a Sedition Acts incited many enemies
- prep for potential war with france swelled debt and taxes -> federalist "handicap" in election of 1800
- Feds started attacking Jefferson -> kids with Sally Hemings, sccused of being an atheist
JEFFERSON STUFF
- Aaron Burr was VP
- Jeff policies -> check gov. power, frugal and simple, unexpectedly moderate
- Strict economy (doesn't tamper with Hamilton's bank system)
THE JUDICIARY
- judiciary Acts of 1801 -> expanded federal jurisdiction
- Hated John Marshall -> Marbury v. Madison (judicial review)
MADISON
- took office on March 4, 1809 -> Macon's Bill No.2
- Macon's Bill No.2 -> prohibited British + English warships from entering American harbors or territorial waters (it failed)
NATIVE ISSUES
- Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa went against assimilation
- Battle of Tippecanoe -> Tecumseh was killed
- Native confederacy dream died with him
WAR OF 1812
- Madison believed that war would restore faith in his Republican gov. -> divided the country by party and part of the country (sectionalism)
"THE AMERICAN SYSTEM"
- Nationalism rose along with manufacturing
- Tariff of 1816 -> for protection not revenue
- Henry Clay's "American System" -> strong banks, tariffs were essential, improved infrastructure (paid by states)
ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS
- James Monroe is the next prez -> level headed and positive
- peace and prosperity in early years
- many problems emerged though... tariffs, the bank, LA purchase, sectionalism, and slavery debate
PANIC OF 1819
- deflation, bankruptcy, bank failures, unemployment, overcrowded debt prisons
- contributing factors -> overspeculation of western lands and banks being mean
- Lower class hit the hardest
- Planted Jacksonian ideals
THE WEST
- 9 new states between 1791 and 1819
- Land was cheap which lead to mass immigration
- Land Act of 1820 (land was now cheaper and allowed for roads and canals to be built)
MISSOURI COMPROMISE
- Missouri was now a slave state and Maine was a non-slave state
- Slavery was outlawed above the Mason Dixon line
JUDICIAL NATIONALISM
- McCulloh v. Maryland -> implied powers
- Cohens v. Virginia -> state review
- Gibbons v. Ogden -> states can't control interstate commerce
- All empowered the Fed
- Fletcher v. Peak -> court can void state laws
- Dartmouth v. Woodward -> states can't change contracts
- All provided stability to businesses
MONROE DOCTRINE
- "Self-defence doctrine" writen by James Monroe
- it was never a law
Jackson:
CORRUPT BARGAIN
- last old school election
- no-one won so the House broke the deadlock and John Q. Adams won
- Clay's helped Adams so he became the secretary of state -> Jackson saw this as corrupt
ELECTION OF 1828
- very antagonistic -> mudslinging (including the wives) and many exagerrations
- Jackson won (southern and western voters)
JACKSONIAN PROBLEMS
- increased tariffs for all -> south called it the "Tariff of Abominations"
- South Carolina tried to nullify but Jackson threatened to hang everyone so they repealed their nullification
- Henry Clay's cools tensions -> Compromise Tariff of 1833
INDIAN REMOVAL
- Jackson ignored the Supreme Court and uprooted over 100,00 natives from their land
- Indian Removal Act -> trail of tears
- Jackson wins the election of 1832 despite this
THE WHIGS AND VAN BUREN
- The whigs were created because of hate for Jackson
- they were conservative progressives that were anti-corruption
- Martin Van Buren ran against Jackson in 1836 and won
- Panic of 1837 -> caused bc of mass speculation of western lands
TEXAS
- Mexico becomes independent in 1821
- many Americans lived in Texas and wanted to keep slavery -> slavery was abolished in Mexico
- Texas declared independence in 1836 -> became a (slave) state in 1837
THE TWO PARTY SYSTEM
- whigs win -> populist democratic style election
- Democrats -> self-interest and states rights
- Whigs -> overall society, liberal gov., and abolition
- birth of modern sectionalism
Slavery:
KING COTTON
- Cotton gin grew cotton farming big time -> created by Eli Whitney
- benefitted both the North and South -> shipping and manufacturing (N) + selling the actual cotton (S)
- Rich plantation owners ran the south
- Regular people still fought in the civil war because they aspired to own slaves
PLANTATION LIFE
- Slaves were extremely value (only 25% of southern population had over 10 slaves)
- Foreign exchange of slaves was ended in 1808 -> grew internal slave traded
- African traditions were blended with Christianity -> no intermarrying, dance, vivid preaching
- many tried to runaway

- American colonization society -> send slaves to Africa
- American anti-slavery society -> abolition and "equality”
