Rhetoric - study of effective, peruasive use of language
Rhetorical Situation - the specific circumstances around a speech or text which inform the author’s writing choices (SOAPS + exigence)
Exigence - the specific occasion/event that prompted the message to be spoken
Purpose - Why are the speaker is conveying a message
Audience - who the writer is speaking to
Writer/Speaker - who is doing the writing
Context - the circumstances surrounding the situation
Rhetorical or Aristotelian Triangle - speaker, audience, purpose (what is the character/persona of the writer, who they are, what they are writing)
Rhetorical Appeals - Attempts by a speaker to persuade an audience (Ethos, pathos, logos)
Ethos - Establishing credibility or authority as a method of persuasion
Pathos - Appeal to emotions, values, desires, and hopes, or fears and prejudices.
Logos - Appealing to reason by offering clear, rational ideas - logical
