Reinforcement: The Biosphere

  • Parts of the Earth where life exists
      - The areas of the Earth where living organisms can be found, commonly referred to as the biosphere. It encompasses various ecosystems ranging from deserts to rainforests, and includes the interaction of all forms of life with the physical environment.

  • Members of a species living in an area
      - Known as a population. This term defines a specific group of individuals belonging to the same species that inhabit a particular geographic location and have the potential to interbreed.

  • Different populations in an area
      - Refers to a community. A biological community consists of different species living together in a particular environment, interacting with one another.

  • Living and nonliving factors in an area
      - This combination makes up an ecosystem. An ecosystem includes all living organisms in a given area, interacting with the nonliving components of that environment (e.g., air, water, soil).

  • Average year-to-year conditions in a region
      - Defined as climate. Climate refers to the long-term meteorological conditions prevailing in an area over extended periods.

  • Day-to-day conditions in a particular place
      - Known as weather. Weather encompasses the short-term variations in atmospheric phenomena in a given area.

  • Climate zone found at the poles of the earth
      - This is referred to as the polar region. Characterized by extreme cold, ice-covered surfaces, and minimal sunlight during certain months of the year.

  • Climate zone found in the middle areas of the earth
      - This area is known as the temperate region. It experiences moderate weather, with four distinct seasons.

      - This is referred to as the tropical region. It is typically characterized by high temperatures and significant rainfall year-round, leading to lush biodiversity.

      - These gases are known as greenhouse gases. They play a critical role in maintaining the Earth’s temperature by preventing heat from escaping into space.

      - This concept refers to biodiversity. Biodiversity encompasses the variety of life in a given ecosystem, biome, or the entire planet.

      - This describes a tropical rainforest. These ecosystems are known for their diverse species, dense greenery, and specific climate conditions that support abundant rainfall throughout the year.

      - This region is called chaparral. Chaparral ecosystems are adapted to periodic fires and have a Mediterranean climate with wet winters and dry summers.

      - Known as a temperate deciduous forest. These forests have trees that shed their leaves seasonally in response to varying climate conditions.

  • Type of forest that has evergreen (conifer) trees, Northern U.S. and Canada
      - This is referred to as a boreal forest or taiga. It is characterized by coniferous trees and long winters, with precipitation mainly in the form of snow.

  • Cold region that has permafrost and long winters
      - This describes a tundra biome. Tundra is known for its cold temperatures, short growing seasons, and a layer of permanently frozen soil known as permafrost.
