Dramatic Play- is a form of play in which a single child imitates another person or acts out a situation.
Socio- dramatic play- the most complex form of play that involves several children imitating others and acting out situations together. It is seldom seen before age 3.
Projection- when a child place feelings or emotions he or she feels onto the puppet.
Solitary play- independent play, mostly seen in infants, when a child plays by themselves.
Parallel play- typical of 2 yr olds, when children play side by side but not with each other.
Cooperative play- play between 2 or more children, stage where socio dramatic play begins.
Personification- giving human traits to non living objects.
Manipulative stage of play- the 1st stage of material use when a child handles props.
Functional stage of play- 2nd stage of material use when the child uses the prop for what it is suppose to be used for.
Imaginative stage of play- the 3rd stage of material use when children don’t need real props and are able to think of substitutes. These children come up with unique ideas for socio- dramatic play.
Role playing- when children engage in socio-dramatic play and imitate adult roles.
Coaching- requires providing children with ideas for difficult situations.
Modeling- showing children the appropriate behavior to use during their socio- dramatic play.
Prop box- contains materials and equipment that encourage children to explore various roles and extend their play
Puppetry- involves the use of puppets in play
Conflict- 2 or more forces that oppose one another and adds interest to the story.
Play themes- often focused on everyday situations that changes with age and can be real life or imaginary situations.
Costume corner- area where costumes for dramatic play are kept.
Hand puppets- the easiest to use, held in front of face or over head.
Mascot puppets- a typically large puppet that can be used year round for routines, a teaching tool, and introducing activities and class members.
Plot- the most challenging aspect of writing a puppet story.
Me puppets- using the child’s hand to create a puppet with markers or other materials.
Puppets- a figure designed in likeness to a human or an animal figure that is a powerful learning tool for young children and can be used as a learning tool in many areas of the classroom.
Finger puppets- are used like hand puppets only a different character can be used on each finger, puppets can be individual or made with a glove.
