Bhangra Music

From the Punjab region: Northern India/Pakistan

Traditional Bhangra:

  • 14th century

  • simple melodies

  • always played live

  • very rhythmic

  • the dhol is played with two beaters, unlike the tabla

  • tumbi: one-stringed guitar that plays riffs

  • has singing

  • has light-hearted lyrics

  • celebrates harvest

Modern Bhangra:

  • uses modern instruments: synthesisers, decs, guitar, drumkit, samples

  • some lyrics in English

  • lots of “hoi!” cries

  • Started in 1970s 80s

  • celebrates weddings and other celebrations

  • includes hip hop, reggae and disco

The Chaal Rhythm:

Played by dhol.

Dha = bass + treble sides of dhol played together

Na = treble side only
