intramolecular forces are forces (bonds) that hold atoms together in a molecule. (within)

intermolecular forces or forces that hold together (between)



☆ intramolecular forces (forces with a molecule)
    ・ ionic bonding
    ・covalent bonding

☆ intermolecular forces
   ・ hydrogen bonding
         -  occurs between molecules with a hydrogen bonded to a nitrogen, oxygen, or fluorine.
         - strongest intermolecular force that we study
   ・ dipole - dipole interactions
         - occurs between polar molecules 
         - second strongest intermolecular force that we study
   ・ London dispersion forces
         - occurs between every single molecule
         - weakest intermolecular force that we study



☆ hydrogen bonding 
   ・ occurs when a hydrogen is covalently bonded to a nitrogen, oxygen, or fluorine
         - these three elements are electronegative and cause the hydrogen to be positive
         - when hydrogen takes on semi-positive charge, it is attracted to negative charges from other molecules.
☆ Dipole-Dipole interactions

・occur when molecule is polar
-interacts with the partial negative end of another polar molecule
☆London dispersion forces
・Brief temporary attractions between molecules that just exist
・weakly attractive forces that are caused by random movement of electrons around the cloud
