Chapter 1: Trans Golgi Network

Protein Synthesis Production Line

  • Key Components:
    • Nucleus: The site of transcription where the DNA is used to synthesize mRNA.
    • Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER):
    • Rough ER: Studded with ribosomes; the site where proteins are synthesized and folded.
    • Smooth ER: Lacks ribosomes; involved in the synthesis of lipids and detoxification processes.
    • Golgi Complex:
    • Involved in the modification, sorting, and packaging of proteins for secretion.
    • Structure:
      • Composed of flattened membrane-bound sacs, resembling pancakes when viewed in cross-section.
      • Involves a network known as the Trans Golgi Network (TGN).
      • The TGN contains endosomes, vacuoles, and the plasma membrane.
      • Responsible for transporting proteins from the Golgi to the outside of the cell (exocytosis).
    • Plasma Membrane: Final destination where proteins are either embedded or secreted outside the cell.

Exocytosis

  • Definition:
    • The process by which cells expel materials to the outside environment.
  • Function: Essential for processes such as
    • Hormone secretion
    • Neurotransmitter release
    • Delivery of membrane proteins and lipids to the plasma membrane.

Endocytosis

  • Definition:
    • The process in which cells absorb molecules from outside by engulfing them into vesicles.
  • Mechanism:
    • Involves invagination, where the plasma membrane folds inwards to form a pocket around the substance, which then pinches off to form an internal vesicle.
  • Types:
    • Phagocytosis: The intake of large particles or organisms.
    • Pinocytosis: The uptake of liquid containing dissolved substances.
    • Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis: The uptake of specific substances after they bind to receptors on the cell surface.

Historical Context

  • Endosymbiosis Theory:
    • Suggests that certain organelles, such as mitochondria and chloroplasts, originated from free-living prokaryotes that were engulfed by ancestral eukaryotic cells.
    • Supports the evolution of complex cells by describing a symbiotic relationship that allowed for the internalization of organelles over millions of years.
