• reputation for being rash made him declare his desire to carry out the will of his predecessor

• speak softly and carry a big stick and you will go far
• if everyone is scared of you no need to ask twice

Imperialism and the pannamal cannal

• America wanted it to increase naval strength and cut time to travel to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines
• legal issues
• 1850 treaty with Great Britain stated the US couldn’t have exclusive control over such a route
• Clayton buyer treaty
• 1901 Britain was willing to consent to the HAy preface treaty in 1901
  • gave us the right to build and fortify a canal
• The Nicaraguan route was highly favored by American experts
• French Canal Company wanted to salvage their expensive mistake of an s-shaped Panama canale dropping the price from 109mil to 40mil
• congress picked Panama and french canal company in 1902
• negotiations with Panama fell through as Panama wanted more (the US was willing to give it but TR was impatient and was up for reelection)
• Panama has a revolution(led by a french dude) against Columbian rule
• Or doesn’t let Columbians cross the isthmus in a very strained interpretation of a Columbian treaty demanding perfect neutrality from their station their
• The new Panama prime minister signed the treaty for the price of 250,000x+10mil (x being years)
• Called it the” rape of Panama”
• marked down spiral in us Latin American relations

Roosevelt Collar

• Latin American debt defaults to Britain and german
• Germany spanks 2 venswalian ships as retribution
• TR is scared if Europe gets in as debt collectors they will stay
• “Preventative intervention”
• Blatant disregard for the Monroe doctrine
• declared that in future cases of default us would intervene and pay off their debts so Europe cant intervene
• then Latin American nations would pay off the us
• general tone only US gets to push them around
