Colonization: - Canada has a tendency to time stamp colonialism - Helps avoid people feeling guilty. Indigeous people were conquered (WRONG) - Indigeous peoples in Canada were not conquered - Their histories are complex interactions, ally ship, treaties and negations Indigeous people don’t pay taxes - Do pay taxes, with only certain exemptions for status/and/ or on reserve Indians, which does not include non-status, metis, or Inuit. - 80% of indigenous people live off reserve, and pay taxes off reserve. Indigeous people were conquered (WRONG) - Indigenous peoples in Canada were not conquered - Their histories are complex interactions, ally ship, treaties and negations | Two Canoes: One River Focus: Journey though indigenous ways of knowing being and worldviews.
Positionally and Privilege. - Wheel of Power o Many indigeous people are unable to connect to their indigeous culture and beliefs, o Unable to own property and able to get a steady life. Reflection - A lot of people are unable to see themselves in the media - Lack of presence of people that don’t have a dual income, or people that have parents that don’t have post secondary education - Lack of being able to speak their native language. - History- due to me being white- lots of privilege around that. - Personal experience- not have relationships with idnigeous people because of the system, and were segregated within Canada, i.e schools, hospitals, - Push- good stuff, Pull- bad stuff. Police - RCMP was created to controlling indigeous Canadians. - Indian act- unable to pass Indian status to children - Missing and murdered indigeous women.
Reserve land - Cant build equity, wealth for generations or even a Mortage - Don’t own the land. - Mobility- idnigeous people, weren’t able to leave the reserve. Myths and Misconcpetions - Lack of representation- no statues, no history books

Indigenous stereotypes - Eligibility for funding is restricted to status Indians recognized by the federal government. It’s important to note that even if eligible, not everyone automatically gets funding to high demand. Indigeous people don’t pay taxes - Do pay taxes, with only certain exemptions for status/and/ or on reserve Indians, which does not include non-status, metis or Inuit. 80% of indigenous people live off reserve, and pay taxes off reserve. Indigenous people get free housing - The “free ride” myth suggests that indigenous people in Canada receive special benefits from the federal government, which is rooted in historical fiduciary. Indigenous people are Alcoholics - Response to alcoholic similare other groups - No cultural or genetic predisposition that makes them more prone to alcoholism. Wearing any indigeous item is cultural approriation - Buying stuff by indigeous companies.
